Issue N° 05

We're all rocking and rolling on our own path, and fighting the good fight in a world filled with uncertainties; just like our ancestors did. It isn't easy, but over many generations we've become pretty adept at embracing life's unknowns. Every time we practice and celebrate our roots — who we really are as people — we feel a little less fear and a little more purpose. It's that feeling we get after a ceremony, or making tea, or learning a new word. That feeling of 'I got this, no matter what tomorrow brings'.

How To Steal A Canoe

by Amanda Strong

How to Steal a Canoe is a song that tells the story of a young Nishnaabeg woman and an old Nishnaabeg man who rescue a canoe from a museum and return it to its rightful lake. On a deeper level, it signifies the process of stealing back the precious parts of us, that were always ours in the first place. The spoken lyrics in this piece are by Nishnaabeg poet Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and the original score is by Cree cellist Cris Derksen.

Amanda Strong is an Indigenous filmmaker, media artist and stop motion director currently based out of unceded Coast Salish territories also known as Vancouver.
