Working on a Renaissance

{{cree_title}}

A Poem by Robbie Madsen

{{cree_subheader}}

Escape the dogma of religion
And reclaim spirituality
Lose the alcoholism
And get back to sobriety
Why do I take these pills
When the cure is in the trees?
I’m sick of this stupid drill
And I hear something calling me

Replace this, refurbish that
At whatever the cost
There’s no way I’m going back
I’m working on a renaissance
I am not afraid to lose
That which must be lost
I’m here now and free to choose
And I’m working on a renaissance

I don’t have to kneel and worship
In a designated building
No need of any script
I have 7 Grandfather Teachings
Today I will be the one
To decide who I love and how
All the abuse is done and gone
I own all my power now

Replace this, refurbish that
At whatever the cost
There’s no way I’m going back
I’m working on a renaissance
I am not afraid to lose
That which must be lost
I’m here now and free to choose
And I’m working on a renaissance

Before rebirth there must be death
And I know this must die
For I can’t take another step
In an identity that isn’t mine
From here on out, I love my life
Colonizers don’t want me to
But I will sleep very well tonight
Knowing Creator approves

Replace this, refurbish that
At whatever the cost
There’s no way I’m going back
I’m working on a renaissance
I am not afraid to lose
That which must be lost
I’m here now and free to choose
And I’m working on a renaissance
